RSNA 2009 Annual Meeting – Chicago

Chicago skylineThe Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) Annual Meeting this year will be held November 29-December 4, 2009 at the McCormick Place Convention Center, as always, in Chicago, IL. Of all the U.S. cities in which to hold a conference, few could offer more things to do than Chicago. This is both a good thing and a bad one, because while there are literally thousands of different activities one can engage in while visiting, as a tourist (particular one attending a meeting!) one is limited in time and (at least, for most of us)¬†budget. These limitations make visiting a city like Chicago somewhat overwhelming. For those of you attending the RSNA meeting this year looking for excellent (which means reliable and relatively inexpensive) housing options as well as the most enjoyable–and, again, inexpensive–things to do, we have put together a list, as promised.

Regarding housing, your best bet is to book early because hotels–in particular, those close to the convention center–always sell out and do so relatively early. Housing is notoriously expensive in Chicago, so those of you looking for double-digit prices will have to stay in Indiana. Here are some hotels that we recommend based on previous travelers reviews. If you know of any hotels that we missed, please leave a comment and share with the rest of us. Note that the average year-round rates are often inflated, as most people are able to secure considerably cheaper rates by booking directly with the hotel online (e.g. special internet rates), using membership discounts (e.g. AAA, AARP) or booking through an internet-based travel agency (e.g. Hotwire).

1. Hampton Inn Majestic Hotel (ranked #2 of 189 hotels in Chicago on Tripadvisor, average year-round rate $258). This is our top pick; it is located relatively close to McCormick Place (2.2 miles away) and received stellar reviews from previous guests.

2. Homewood Suites by Hilton Chicago Downtown (ranked #3 of 189 hotels in Chicago on Tripadvisor, average year-round rate $256, 3.0 miles away)

3. DoubleTree Hotel Chicago – Magnificent Mile (#39 of 189 hotels in Chicago on Tripadvisor, average year-round rate $211, 4.0 miles away)

In case you are wondering, the absolute closest hotel (just next door) is the Hyatt Regency McCormick Place (and according to the Hyatt website, their rooms have been recently renovated).

For those not familiar with Chicago, the area or “neighborhood” McCormick Place is located in is called Near South Side. Yelp is filled with reviews/ratings on everything you would ever want to know exists in Near South Side. Take note of Panozzo’s Italian Market (having Italian food is a must when in Chicago–check out this unassuming deli for a reasonably priced and phenomenal sandwich!)

Lastly, given that the meeting is in the winter (average high temperature in Nov/Dec is around 40 degrees, average low temperature is around 27 degrees), you will be spending most of your time indoors. Check out the amazing museums in Chicago. Most offer free admissions on specific days of the week. The following is a list of the most popular museums in Chicago as well as their free days during the RSNA meeting.

1. Art Institute of Chicago – Free general admission every Thursday night through the year from 5 pm to 8 pm.

2. Museum of Contemporary Art – Free general admission all day on Tuesdays year round.

3. Museum of Contemporary Photography – Free and open to the public.

4. Field Museum – Free admission days that correspond with the RSNA meeting are on December 2 and December 3, 2009.

5. Shedd Aquarium – Free general admission on November 30, 2009 (the last free day of the year!)

6. Adler Planetarium – Free admission on December 1, 2009.

7. Chicago History Museum – Admission to the museum is free on Mondays.

8. Museum of Science and Industry – Unfortunately, the last free day of the year is on November 11th. General admission for adults is $13, children (3-11) is $9, and seniors is $12.

I am interested in attending the event, RSNA 2009 Annual Meeting – Chicago. I am the sales manager of the company CARREX INTERNATIONAL TRADING SAC, importing medical equipment, and we want to increase our line of radiology equipment (mammography). Could you please tell me how I can participate in this event as I need to register or receive a letter of invitation to this meeting?

Hi Esdhers: Please check the RSNA website for the meeting. You can find the
official site at http://rsna2009.rsna.org/. Since you are from Peru,
here is a link to information for International Visitors on the
    official site: http://rsna2009.rsna.org/attendees/international/. This
is the link you should use–and there is a section specifically
    regarding receiving an Invitation Letter.

You may also consider being an exhibitor to exhibit your company and
products at next year’s RSNA meeting, so here is a link to
the exhibitors information on the official site:
http://rsna2009.rsna.org/exhibitor/. While it is too late to be an
exhibitor at this year’s meeting, take a look at the timeline at
    http://rsna2009.rsna.org/exhibitor/key_dates_deadlines.cfm so that you
may be able to have the option for next year’s meeting if you wish.

    I hope this helps.
