Making the 2009 AAPM Annual Meeting in Anaheim More Economical

April 27, 2009 · Written by ·

I have always attended either AAPM summer school or the AAPM annual meeting (or both). The AAPM annual meeting and summer school have always been an excellent source of information for professional growth and development, especially in recent years. The program is rich, the speakers are knowledgable, and the exhibitions are informative and helpful. In addition, the meeting has always been a place to meet and unite with older friends and colleagues. Here are some tips to make this year’s trip a little more comfortable and economical.

The AAPM Annual Meeting will be held on July 26-30 in Anaheim, California this year. If you plan on going to the meeting, you can save $175.00 if you register before June 10 (registration is $525.00 before June 10 and $700.00 after for AAPM members). $175.00 is a good amount of money in this era of economic hardship.

Younger physicists should keep in mind that July 8 is the deadline to register for SAMs sessions/credits.

Another advantage in registering early is to secure good deals on housing. The Housing Connection is the only designated housing provider for the AAPM meeting this year.  Their contact info is: 888-505-4486 (for domestic calls), 801-505-4603 (for international calls) or (e-mail). Special, discounted AAPM meeting rates will be given only until June 24. If you wait until after June 24, not only will you miss lower rates, you may not even get a room at a nearby hotel. The two most inexpensive hotels that are listed on the AAPM conference website are given below (but watch out for the Anaheim Maingate–the reviews aren’t so stellar):

1) Sheraton Park Hotel – $122 Single or Double (less than 1 block or 3 minute walk)
2) Red Lion Anaheim Maingate – $124 Single or Double (1 block or 6 minute walk)

Also, remember to check out reviews on the hotel you are considering before you set your reservation in stone. I’ve always found the reviews on Tripadvisor to be rather helpful in making hotel decisions. Here is a link to a ranking of the hotels in Anaheim (based on user reviews): Anaheim hotels on Tripadvisor. The highest rated hotel (#2 of all hotels in Anaheim, CA) offering a special AAPM rate through the Housing Connection is:

Doubletree Guest Suites – $155 Single or Double (1 block or 6 minute walk)

The reviews for Doubletree Guest Suites are impeccable and the price is competitive, so book early for a good deal!

Also, when booking hotels and airlines, remember to give your guest rewards number or frequent flyer number to rack up points you can redeem in the future for a free night or a free flight.

Lastly, for nearby restaurants, shops, hotels, nightlife, things-to-do, check out Yelp! You can find detailed user reviews/recommendations of neighborhood gems by people who know the area best. All entries include a rating on price range:
