Clinical Physicist

Reporting to the Administrative Director, Radiation Oncology, the physicist is responsible for performing dose-rate calculations for treatment applications as well as all aspects of radiation safety including monitoring and testing radiation generating equipment, and disposing of hazardous radioactive waste in accordance with state and federal regulations. Calibrates and repairs radiation generating equipment, and modifies/designs equipment as necessary. Provides instruction to other departmental personnel and radiology students in areas of atomic and non-atomic physics, radiation safety and so forth. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care that is appropriate to the ages of the patients served.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

1. The job incumbent is required to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care appropriate to the age of the patients served on the unit. This requires that the incumbent demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development as well as the physical, emotional and psycho-social needs of the patient population served.

2. Knowledge of radiation procedures, radiologic technology and atomic and nonatomic physics, and ability to repair and calibrate radiation therapy and radiology equipment at a level normally acquired through a Master’s degree in Medical Radiation Physics.

3. Approximately five to seven years progressively more responsible related work experience necessary in order to gain thorough understanding of state and federal laws governing use and disposal of radioactive materials, and acquire the technical skills necessary to effectively perform dose-rate calculations, develop radiation safety programs, and the like.

4. Interpersonal skills necessary in order to provide formal classroom instruction, speak at professional meetings and interface with all levels of Medical Center personnel.

5. Analytical skills necessary in order to solve difficult technical problems such as equipment failures, quality control evaluations, radiation doses, contamination and the like.
